Week 7

After a long weekend with my family, I wasn't too excited to head back to work, but luckily I had some things to do. During this week I was mostly focused on walkthroughs, meetings with the client to discuss and understand the processes and controls they have in place. I went through the prior year workpapers to get a better understanding of the walkthroughs and compiled a list of evidence that was obtained in prior year that would probably need to be obtained this year as well.

On Wednesday we had our annual team meeting. Our engagement team went over things that happened in prior year that went well and also some pain points and how to improve. They also talked about a tentative schedule of the audit and the importance of finishing the planning portion of the audit before busy season begins in January. Even though I am only here for the summer, I got a good grasp on what the rest of the year looks like.

I had to leave the meeting early because I had an intern volunteering event. We went to a school to volunteer with a program that provides classes during the summer to keep underprivileged kids involved and motivated in school during the summer. I stayed with a class of third graders for two transitions. The first thing they did was play the recorder. Honestly I was getting pretty annoyed as the kids did not listen and would play randomly. Also, the recorder is probably the most annoying instrument so that did not help. I was very happy to move onto the martial arts room. The kids got to be active and do various animal crawls (crab, bear, etc.). It's obvious the kids enjoyed this much more and their attitude got better. The other interns and I got to join in and play the games with the kids.

After the volunteering ended, some interns and I went to a happy hour at 230 5th Ave, a rooftop bar near the flatiron building. As it was extremely hot outside with not much seating, we sat at a large table inside. I was mostly sitting with people I met at promotion day, but I also saw someone from Ohio State so we quickly caught up.

During this week we also had some Start interns shadow our team. Start interns are interns, usually minorities, who get an pre-internship internship. They don't do a full internship, but rather work on a project and shadow various teams. They basically get an inside look at the different positions at PwC which helps them choose what line of service to go into, and this program leads to a full internship the next summer. We had inters shadow us Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. They didn't really have too much to do as there wasn't too much going on, but I tried to talk to each of them about my internship experience and what I've learned.

On Thursday, we had our intern finale event at Chelsea Piers. It was a big event space with free food and drinks and a dance floor. I met up with some friends I made at promotion day and had a lot of fun catching up with them.

On Friday I had breakfast with my relationship partner and one other intern. My relationship partner is a partner in the insurance practice who is supposed to get to know me and answer any questions I have about PwC and my future there. We mostly talked about non-PwC things which was nice. I learned about his family and we talked about Hamilton and traveling. He did talk a bit about his journey at PwC and some recent efforts PwC has made to better improve its employees both through digital upskilling and work life balance.

After breakfast, I went to a Digital Accelerator workshop for interns in the Insurance practice. They gave us some sample data and we had to figure out on our own how to summarize it using our automation tool. It was a good way to practice what I've been learning. They also took us through some bots that they've created so we could see how useful they are and how they can save so much time doing basic tasks.

I left early on Friday to take a train to Philadelphia to spend the weekend with my family. This was my first time traveling by train my myself and luckily it wasn't too hard. I'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend with family I haven't seen in a year.
